   Commentaire
   Egoïsme ou superstition: les handicapés font fuir, même les spectateurs. C'est dommage car certains des films qui leur sont consacrés sont, comme celui-ci, admirables. Une histoire vraie aussi dramatique, transposée à l'écran, risquait de sombrer dans un attendrissement excessif. L'écueil est évité. C'est un film dur, fort, prenant, réaliste qu'a signé Jim Sheridan. Certaines scènes de paroxysme sont bouleversantes. Le comédien Daniel Day Lewis y fait une prestation extraordinaire (elle lui a valu l'Oscar d'interprétation).
